Rail cargo

Digitising the freight offer calculation of a 150-year-old business

Focus: Service design + Prototyping
Team: 3 people
Duration: 2 months
My role: Service design + UX/UI design

How might we streamline and improve the freight service ordering process to ensure faster and more efficient quotes and route planning?

Challenge

Rail cargo is a 150-year-old business and is obviously also affected by the digitalisation. We helped Austria’s ÖBB Rail Cargo Group to design their main digital touchpoint for ordering freight services from ÖBB. For this product and service configurator, we reviewed their services, created a logic and data model, added the specific cost calculators and designed the UX and UI for a fully interactive real-data Framer/React prototype.

Unfortunately, additional details and designs are confidential and can’t be shown here. The project is currently being developed further by the client and extended to the entire product portfolio. In the future, the tool will be used internally for proposal preparation before being made available to customers.

My role

We were a small team of 3 people (2 designers and 1 director) – so I was pretty much involved in all aspects of the project. However, my main responsibilities were service design and workshop facilitation at the start and ideation stage of the project, conceptualising the data model and UX/UI design of the clickdummy, which was used for alignment with the client and as a baseline for the final interactive Framer prototype.
