Building sonnen’s first direct B2C energy tariff

Focus: Digital Product
Year: 2024
Duration: 4 months
My role: Lead designer

How might we support our customers to always get the best energy prices (and create a new upselling opportunity for sonnen)?

ONGOING PROJECT

Tl/dr dynamic tariffs?

Dynamic energy tariffs offer significant savings by adjusting prices based on real-time demand, allowing customers to reduce costs by using or storing energy at off-peak times.

The main use case is to encourage smarter energy consumption, helping users save money while reducing strain on the grid. By leveraging real-time data, these tariffs make energy use more efficient and environmentally friendly and are seen as a major step in the smart energy transition.

Save money
Pay only the real-time energy price and optimize your consumption and storage when costs are at their lowest.

Be in control
Complete transparency and control over energy prices and consumption, right at your fingertips.

Power a greener future
Renewables lower prices, so consuming cheaply means going green. Smart consumption accelerates the global transition to clean energy.

Challenge

Designing sonnen’s first dynamic energy tariff product came with unique challenges. The key was balancing simplicity with functionality – making complex energy data accessible, easy to understand, and engaging for a diverse user base. We also needed to ensure seamless integration with existing products while addressing the needs of both new and existing customers.

Most importantly, this product marks sonnen’s first direct B2C energy tariff and opens the door to future in-app upselling opportunities for additional products to existing customers.

My role

As lead designer, I was fully responsible for managing the entire project – from conducting research to validate user needs for this new contract product, to managing internal stakeholders, aligning multiple product teams, exploring design solutions, and overseeing the final handover to development.

The product is currently in the final stages of implementation and hasn’t been released to the public yet. The official launch is set for January 2025, so stay tuned for more – exciting things are on the way!
